So I want to get back to my original point from last nite. Some of you were a little drunk and got off subject.... :)

there's no way to know who's hanging out on the LMA with you, right? Well I've been spending some time snooping around this place, and reading about you guys :)

I found a very interesting thread from a while back that was similar to this. It was like "roll call", or something.

So, just curious. Who's online right now with me?? come and say hello...

i have been skiing and mountain biking while tripping and/or stoned for 25 years or so - my guardian angel finally flipped me the middle finger in July and I took an ambulance ride to the hospital and am still in a leg cast to this day.

so yes, i waved the white flag for at least the near future if not beyond and am giving my guardian angel a long vacation in the Mayan Riviera for some cool snorkeling and mixed drinks on the beach - he/she deserves it - very well deserved i might add

yeah, only get into my office once a week or so due to ride issues - havent been able to drive since it happened. This site and all you great people have certainly been a godsend. That is why i seem to be here all the time - i am. Been helping me keep my sanity. Also why I come across as an asshole periodically - frustration level builds and i kinda vent if ive had a couple of drinks so when i get the opportunity, dependin upon the night..... lame excuse i know, but it is a reason...... naahhhh - i'm just an asshole in general :)

but, i'm better off than many, i am thankful for that. this too shall pass - hopefully soon :)

have a great day

I spiked my front tire while avoiding a pine tree limb and mistakenly hit the front brake at the same time. My right leg slid off the pedal (i wasn't using clips at the time), planted and twisted while the rest of my body flew forward. My tibia and fibula shatterered a few inches above my ankle. While i lay on the ground i tried to move, heard a crunch, looked down, and my lower leg wanst exactly at the angle it should be - lol. Thank god for cell phones.

Totally displaced fracture - they couldn't rod it - bone is sitting half on half off at a 45 degree angle (like a roof). May never be able to ski again - not sure. pretty fucked up. shouldn't have a limp - hope not anyways. not sure what range of activity i will be able to do. i did a sweet job on it. xray is hideous and will always be. but, like the old 50's tv show - "You Asked For It"

I never heard the story before, gnarly fuckin' wreck man! I'll include your leg in my humble prayers. I didn't follow all that closely tonight, did scan the threads and you done good new little brother, a "kinder, gentler Wolf"... I'll admit I kind of was reading dancinbears and saying to myself "Waht's she after, what does she want?", but I realized, she is a woman and curious and inquisitive. Not a fault, we're men and basically ignorant jerks... Just the way it is. Next thought, uhhhh, can you help me with it twin? OK, I got it... I'm fairly new here too, I've been grabbing music and very casually lurking here for a few years, but really just joined in and this place is great, you've put very well and SomeDarkHollow put up a very good post on just how unique, free, fun and yes informative too, that this forum is. I appreciate being a part of it, I'm starting to ramble and everyones probably gone to bed. Which I should do too! Back to work tomorrow. Happy Trails to all...

she is though - trust me - how often have i lately delved deeply into dead related posts other than the really cool Sparky sending me a couple of shows I've been looking for.

Yeah, Ive been flapping about Kimock, flapping about python, flapping completely sophomoric jokes. This forum has turnend into a forum not "just" about the dead - it has turned into a forum about "deadheads." how many posts have there been about scotch???? about amsterdam???? or other subjects???

my point is (do i really have a point??) we are all learning about each other and goofing with each other "around the dead" and also including "dead"subjects within it. This is what makes this forum so great!!!!! That is my opinion anyway -= i may be wrong, but i have learned far far far more about other band than the dead on here than any other forum in my life and that is phenomenal. Dancin is new here and is learnin as well - she is just new and is learning the ropes - as she has said herself about 4 or 5 times - patience toward her is due

btw - this is not an attack against you by any stretch - hope you know that - i think you may feel similarly - this is an awesome forum for laughs, learning, and sharing

if your questioning D-bears 'deadhead' (if you have to use a label) status (why on earth for?), just ask yourself how many Jerry Garcia art exhibits you've been to lately, bringing along your three girls, some sporting GD t-shirts, and then providing a link for others 'into' the GD to some photos you took so that others could enjoy some of Jerry's art.

and you question whether she's a 'deadhead'?

Yes--I started one a couple weeks ago asking for info and deleted it after 20 views without a response because I figured it was going too far...but I am sappy like that, figure we connect with more info, lean towards giving folks the benefit of the doubt, etc., BUT I totally understand the hesitancy of Ashes and Tbrad, and this is just another example of how we are all feeling our way along in this odd new world of etherspace, as someone (??? damn, can't recall) said in their thoughtful commentary on my whining post yesterday ('can't we all be friends?'). If Dire is doing his best to be open and welcoming, we have to be doing something right, right? With luck, no one will be too upset by any of this tonight.

WT: just to clarify, since i'm not sure what you mean, but if i had any hesitancy, it was toward changing this forum to reflect the sort of bells & whistles found elsewhere. But as for Dancinbears and her inviting & wanting-to-know sorta questions, i figure folks will either participate or not, depending on their particular mood at the moment, and no pressure either way, right?

The world is replete and stuffed with dumbass politicians, people only in it for what they can get, people cruelly using other people, people who are self-absorbed a-holes, and degenerates who live only to feed and leech off the sweat of others. Have no time for any of them, and in a cold sorta view, they all probably should have been killed at birth. And D-bears is none of the above.

Lets hope we can say that this isn't the norm for this forum:

All these gentlemen were there inside
when she entered, utterly naked.
They had been drinking, and began to spit at her.
Recently come from the river, she understood nothing.
She was a mermaid who had lost her way.
The taunts flowed over her glistening flesh.
Obscenities drenched her golden breasts.
A stranger to tears, she did not weep.
A stranger to clothes, she did not dress.
They poked her with cigarette ends and with burnt corks,
and rolled on the tavern floor with laughter.
She did not speak, since speech was unknown to her.
Her eyes were the color of faraway love,
her arms were matching topazes.
Her lips moved soundlessly in coral light,
and ultimately, she left by that door.
Scarcely had she entered the river than she was cleansed,
gleaming once more like a white stone in the rain;
and without a backward look, she swam once more,
swam toward nothingness, swam to her dying.

~ Neruda, _Fable Of The Mermaid And The Drunks_

Thanks ... very glad you liked it. It came to me immediately when i saw the reaction to D-bears post. No one touched the raw poetic in terms of beauty and the elements, particularly the sea, like Pablo Neruda. He is second to none in that regard. I can't remember exactly where i got that piece, but it was sent me several years ago in an e-mail. Though i'm fairly certain i must have it in one of my Neruda books, but i'm not about to go searching the bookshelf, not even for you wolfboy :)

the only one who is probably going to be upset is dancin - probably one of the nicer newbies to show up in awhile. she tried to get to know us and got kicked in the face by a couple of regulars (which i usually my job - lol)

she did nothing wrong, asked less than what we have shared between ourselves already on this public forum, and some of us made her feel unwelcome partly because she shared a welcome to another site she likes - gee, what a sin - shame on those who jumped on her due to that. pathetic and paranoid. but whatever - i could go on and on abusing that rational. at least some of us - like arbuthnot - saw it for what it was - a kind invitation - not a total hijack - who the hell would leave this site anyways??? (i wish some would though - lol)

It's cool Max, just got thrown off a bit by some of the reaction. It's not like D-bears was coming into the forum with an attitude like TelephoneToughGuy (remember him?), or others that have emptied their weapons and split the scene, or even like that little internal harangue of several days ago, e.g. Liam. It's as Dire said, she's new, isn't used to the ways and means that this place operates on a normal basis. Didn't mean my response to you to sound necessarily directed at you. And hey, we're cool, 'cuz if you remember, didn't i adopt you a couple of weeks ago anyway, so long as you brought along the Sinatra box set and your sister. :)

I don't mean this peraonally, I'm sure your cool enough in person - but this constant need to know personal things about everybody creeps people out at the least - and makes paranoid folks (not saying I am one) wonder what the hell you are all about and why you wanna know. There are plenty of social boards out there for meeting people, this one is about Grateful Dead's music and history.

Man, it must be a dilemma for you feeling couped up at home, yet going out must be an equally unpleasant ordeal as well. What oh what is a wolf to do. I also think you mentioned you were getting a cat scan or mri back to see if progress was being made- any news. Hang tough cowboy. Speaking of Cowboys, the Dallas/ NYG game should be interesting. I still wait to see TO get KO'd. Sadly, thats like watching NASCAR for the wrecks.

I guess i thought there were more Gentlemen on this site than there are. My Mama must have raised me differently (Thanks Mom!!) - of course rasing two little girls makes me very defensive too - very very defensive.

Shopping is slow and steady - lol. Relying on online shopping too for obvious reasons. Getting picked up by my ever so patient and kind girlfriend in a few for another round of shopping - she is such a godsend (i thinnk she is ready to kill me though - lol)

Find out Tuesday on the healing process (thanks for asking) - the CT scan was last week so i find the results in a couple of days. I'm gonna pull a nutty if this cast doesn't come off. Though probably not as big of a nutty as my girlfriend is gonna pull. My doc better be able to run fast :)

That should be a great game!!! I probably wont get to see much of it - bummer. Damn priorities - wish it was the sunday nighter. I'm with you on TO too. How sweet would it be to watch TO on a crossing pattern, get totally laid out, and see him unmoving on the field with the wind knocked out and his bell rung :) -- no serious injury, hopeing for that would be just wrong, even for TO.

have a great day man - enjoy the games!!

And i myself have certainly responded to D-bears about the difference between this forum and others, and her preferences. But by the same token, she's not here throwing any negative energy and words about. I've read her posts for the past few months now, and if anyone on this forum is 'into' the GD, it's Dancinbears. Hell, she seems to live it, and whatever keeps one happy and content, right?

There has been recent discussion about what is fitting or not fitting on this forum. But the fact is, there is no rule book, and i think it was Earl Powell who stated best that if the thread isn't to your liking, find one that is.

Just my thoughts anyway.

Dancinbears: the amount of web sites with the "who's online" Big Brother crap is virtually limitless. You already know how old we are, you know our professions, you know where we live, and you know our likes and dislikes vis-a-vis the Grateful Dead as well a plethora of other subjects. (Depending, of course, if we were telling the truth and not just messing around when answering the inquiries.)

Please understand that some of us are just solitary souls trying to be faithful to that which has been calling us for all these years and we really, really don't want to have to go through the Dept of Homeland Defense seal-of-approval and have a list of "who's on-line" staring us in the face. In addition, the Archive and Forum are wonderful in its simplicity. If it is really that important for you to have the "who's online" meaningless socialistic tool, I can recommend other sites that may be more to your liking. Please drop it.

Instead, tell us the versions of the following songs you like the best and the meaning of each song from your perspective. If possible, include how the meaning of the songs may have changed as you've gotten older and/or as a result of life events: Dark Star, Terrapin Station, Comes a Time, Wharf Rat, China Doll, Stella Blue, Uncle John's Band, Row Jimmy Row, Bird Song, Built to Last, Standing on the Moon, Days Between, Reuben and Cerise, Mission in the Rain, Crazy Fingers, High Time, Eyes of the World, Brokedown Palace, Deal, The Wheel, Sugaree, Saint Stephen and Franlin's Tower.

Exactly, it makes some of us (not saying me) a bit nervous when we feel that someone is trying to build a dossier on the people who frequent this board - it's nice to feel that there is some anonymity left on the internet.

The only thing that's really important to know is that 2-24-1974 was the most significant musical event in the history of mankind.
Who we are and what we do? not so much

Hm.. to be honest, I never really felt like she was intruding or anything. Boy, this archive forum has been getting so popular lately. When I used to lurk, There would be like.. 3 threads a day.. now there is 15! ha. Anyways, I can understand what some of you guys are saying, but i think it is pretty flagrant that dancinbears is probably a curious, e-extrovert, that wants to get to know people. While I do not voice out my opinion on upgrading forums, I do think that a lot of the perks would be nice. Including being able to see who is on at the time. It's easy.. its just displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Yeah, I certainly don't think D-Bears is threatining in any way. And I'm far less creeped out now that I know she's chick.
Your probably right that the board might benefit from some upgrades, as long as they aren't too intrusive.
Some of us just still have that paranoid streak left over from our previous lives, those of you who know, know what I mean.

ashes and tbrad - you two are way overreacting to dancin's posts - she is used to the other forum where is does list "who's online" like many forums do. chill out dudes. like arbuth said - she hasn't thrown one tiny bit of negative energy out at all and has not asked for one tiny bit of personal info that we have not provided each other long before she showed up on this site. she is trying to fit it to a "brand new" site to her. she seems like a true head to me anyways and is adjusting to a wholly new format. we have been here awhile, some longer than others. cut her some slack and let her adjust to the way this forum operates. this forum is CERTAINLY not the norm!!!!! if you two think it is, you are sheltered.

just my two cents - not trying to start a war - just trying to make a new member and a knowledgeable head feel very welcome in what i though was a friendly welcoming forum.

and trad - watch the way you say things to new people who are trying to be nice - i may have turned over a new leaf, but i haven't had my labotomy yet dude......

ashes - sorry - you know i love ya man !!

Yeah, I totally over reacted, and I've kind of tried to explain in some responses why that post struck me the way it did.
You guys have been pretty patient with some of stupid ass posts, come to think of it.

Haven't seen D-Bears post since my indiscretion, hope she bounces back.

so, do you know what i mean tbrad ( i mean in a kind way) ?

i love this site for its fun, humor , and learning potential, not just for the dead - my buds on here have opened me up to a whole new world of music through trading and posting (i have more dead than i can listen to)

welcome dancin' and the others who need a bit of patience with our learning curve - we are different but wonderful - this is the best forum on the internet imho. sorry for being harsh (i hope you now where i am coming from)

It's late. so this will probably be shorter than I could make it, but I will do my best in a short amount of time. My favorite shows are 2-13-70, 5-23-72, 8-6-74, 9-3-77....ait that will take too long....all of the alpine valley '89 run and pretty much all of may '77 and march '90. As far as favorite songs and their meaning to me.... do I have to pick the songs you picked? I'm a woman, so LLR is probably the one that's got the most personal meaning because of my first love in high school. he was the one who turned me onto the dead, and the words fit perfectly. he broke my heart. I had a friend in high school who died when we were in junior year, and everybody wrote to the dead and asked them to play ripple for an encore at the next show we'd all be at, but they played brokedown palace, so I cry when I listen to it because it's jeff's song. I could go on but I'm trying to make my point quick. I used to be a set I fan. you know like a typical girl, top 40's stuff, so the song had to begin and end. Well I slowly turned to a set II fan. I love when the transition is just right and it's almost hard for me to find when the new song starts. 5-19-77, wow! I like to collect shows that have little stories behind them or are different in some way.... the harley show 6-4-78 and 4-6-82, the other one only has the first verse, and Garcia goes into a truly exceptional morning dew. there are others, I'm saving time. My favorite version of the other one (another favorite song) is 1-22-78. I think I love it so much because the only word I could use to describe it, is that it gets weird in the middle, kind of like single notes, but then the boys bring it back around! love it! I am a huge brent head. My favorite run for him is alpine valley '89 and I've watched the DVD more times than I can count. The women are smarter and good lovin, him and garcia are swipping riffs back and forth, and jerry's just got this look on his face like he's having a good time and you could see he loved him like a little brother. I love shows with lots of stage banter and joking. I am a complete list fanatic, and if it's 5 mnutes between songs, I want to hear it, because I love it when you hear the crowd get nuts! My favorite show build up, for me personally, has got to be 9-14-88. hearing the crowd scream at tuning, all I ould think is yeah! I'm here, got tickets for 2 other nights, the jumping up and down and smiling so hard my face hurt, and let's go boys i'm ready! take me there!

anyway, this was not an answer to you in the least. I do not need you or anyone else to ever tell me if I am a deadhead or not.

your answer is this...
#1 I am a woman, and if you've ever had a woman in your life, that should be enough.

and #2 I very simply forgot for a minute that this isn't deadhook. my bad.

bye boys. you've all been fun. I mean that. sincerely.

WOW! Dancinbare, please stay. I'm buzzed and just skimmed the thread, but I get the idea yer splittin'. Don't. I read your last post and you know more than most of these clowns, which includes me.

Dire - Man, the details of the wreck. Brutal. I have had many wrecks like that and never broke a nail...that's the shits. The story renews my zest for keeping you entertained.

BTW -Jammed some '69 tonight from either Arbuth or Dire...totally rocked....thanks again...both of you.

Whoah wait you are leaving? Look you have an establishment here, and although there are some people that are troubled right now, they'll have to learn to deal with it, and improvise, just like garcia does when he plays lead.

I enjoyed your post. I wasn't asking for it, in the literal sense, but it let me know a lot about you.

All in all,

Please don't leave

Not that I'm aware of. How are you? Saw your Garcia art show pics, I'm jealous. I like his artwork too. 50% of my ties are Garcia! Only have 2 ties total though...

Just popped on as my 18 yr old has been monopolizing the comp. Can't argue as she just got done sending out college applications and I've been watching some good college football. Looks a little quiet tonight so far Bear.

Hi Jody! when you say 'so far', do you mean that the late nite stuff, like last nite, happens a lot here? I got off here pretty late.
and how come I can't understand the time thing on the posts. It's not right. what time zone is it set for?
